Brake questions...

I have 93,000 on my 01 F150. I have had the truck for 25k and haven't done the brakes yet. I brought the truck into a dealership for a different problem and they said that my rear brakes were down to 3mm. So next weekend I am going to try and do them myself.

I have bled the front brakes before, by attaching the tube and continusly pressing the brake pedal. Is the procedure the same for the rear brakes?

I know that the drivers side front rotor is warped so I was planning on replacing the two front rotors, but would it be alright just to have the rears turned?

I read in an older thread about rotors by the companies Reybestos and Gaurdians. Does anyone what quality products that they are?
Or does anyone know where I would be able to purchase cheaper, but decent quality rotors?

Thanks for any help.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but don't you have drumbs on the rear? And either way, why would you need to bleed them for a pad/shoe change?

Well hopefully you could correct me.

And my brother in law said that the squishy/mushy brake pedal problem maybe fixed if I bleed the brakes.

I would recommend any rotor that has been cross-drilled or slotted. Seems to eliminate warpage or reduce it at least.

Having the rear drums turned and replacing the front rotors will be just fine.

I bought the cheapest Advance Auto Wearever brand rotors and pads for my brake job last summer. 6 months and 7,000 miles later, nary a squeak or vibration.

As for the brake fluid, go ahead and bleed all four brakes and flush out the whole system. It's a good idea to replace the brake fluid every now and then.

My drums are fine as yet, but I'll have to tackle them as well some day.

you can turn all the rotors as long as theres enough rotor left( guy at the autoshop should be able to tell you if your rotors arent to0 worn). as far as bleeding the brakes, a "mushy" pedal can be just because your pads are worn. i would wait till you hav enew pads all around and rotors turned or replaced and then see if the pedal has gotten stiffer. as far as replacement rotors, as long as you dont drive like you are in nascar, ford replacement or whatever autozone has should do fine. i have a 2003 F150 with 4 wheel disc and abs and i stop on a dime. good luck!

I've used wearever rotors without problems. It won't hurt to bleed the brakes, but replace the pads and rotors first, to see if that solves the problem. If you do both, you won't know which it was.

I will do that to hopefully figure out the problem.

How much would it be for a decent pair of rotors?

You can either look online, or call the stores local to you for the best price. They'll ask what size wheel bolts your truck has, (14mm). 2 or 4wd, abs or rabs...
I call around for the best prices on rotors, however, I'm more critical about pads. I only use OEM pads, I know it probably doesn't make a hill of beans difference, but it's what I do.

never bought rotors for a 150, but in general they cost $50-75 each depending on the model. ---- most important thing in a brake job is to clean the pins and slide rails on the caliper so they slide side to side easy. wire brush everything and put a little anti-sieze on things. that might be why the disc is warped-- too much dragging since the caliper does not slide free.-- dont know if you have done a disc brake job before or not. pull the caliper off the disc, use a c-clamp to compress the brake puck back into the caliper and get more room for the new disc and pad which will be much thicker.-- i also like to take the c-clamp off, put a 3/4 inch board in the disc hole and have someone step on the brake pedal to stroke the hyddraulic piston, see it moves free, then compress again with the c-clamp. "sticky" is the biggest cause of brake problems.

The only brake job I have done was on my sister's Celica. And my brother in law is going to help me tackle this job.

I am just trying to figure out what type rotors I will need. Decent quality for a decent price. I am trying to pay off my tuition and books for this semester.
