I was trying to check the fluid level on my '93 F150 4x4 transfer case, I started easing the fill plug out and it started gushing, knocked the plug out of may fingers and I figure I spilled aobut a quart. First I thought I pulled the drain plug, but its the fill plug. (Marked FILL and higher up then the drain plug.) Next I put the rear wheels on stands to see if maybe I had the thing a little down hill and when I ease the fill plug out it still starts seeping. ( I held on tight this time.) I have never heard of there being this much fluid in a transfer case, I have always pulled the fill plug, stuck my finger in and made sure the level is at the bottom of the plug. So if its seeping am I ok? And then how did that much fluid get in there anyway? Its a pretty red color and no signs of leaking.
The transmission and T/C share the same vent tube, the Transmission will flow over into the T/C. So they need to be divided. seeping is fine gushing is overfilled, and will create friction in the pump, and you get less volume flowing.
After I made the post I did some more searching. I have an auto transmission and I think the transmission fluid is going into the transfer case. The whole reason I was under there today was cause the transmission level was low and I was looking for leaks. I put more in the front, so I bet its going to flow to the rear again.
Next question is how bad is this? Anybody had the seals fixed? How expensive to have a dealer do it? Can the seals be replaced with only removing the transfer case without dropping the transmission? I have pulled old manual trans (etc) before, and if its can be fixed with just pulling the transfer case (and I dont need a press) I'll do it. (And if it can wait a couple of months for decent weather.)
You have 2 seals, 1 on the rear output of the Transmission and 1 on the input of the T/C how do 2 seals fail to get fluid from the tranny into the T/C? it usually don't happen this way because of the large void between them. Check out this thread read #10 this is usually what happens
