i am kinda new at this engine talk, so most of what you said is like a foreign language to me what would i be looking at price wise to do that sort of build

Dyno 2000 says 683hp @ 7500rpm, 555ft-lbs @ 5500rpm. Desktop dyno tends to underestimate big cams, so that's probably conservative. Anyone with a different (read: better) dyno program want to run this thing?
Sorry. That was kind of a proof of the idea kind of thing. That motor would be a real PITA for anything but a race motor.
I cant really put a price on it. It should be enough to say, it would be a lot. You've got expensive heads, custom pistons (expensive), an expensive valvetrain, expensive intake...
i was thinking of a budget around 3K, that should get me a nice little engine i think. i am pretty much sold on building a 428 though, i think it will be a fun project, and my first engine build.
If you have a budget of 3k, That build is not for you. Here's what you could do for that budget. edelbrock performer RPM manifold, 390 bored .030 over, CRN349521 cam, 750 cfm carb, headers, port and polish the heads yourself. with machining and 390 rebuild kit, I would suggest 10:1 CR pistons. This should be a reasonable price but not worth more than 450hp at the crank ofcourse. Still lots of fun though.
I'm sure some of the other guys will recommend something else, we have some real pro's on here that can really help you out on the specifics.
I'd have to agree. $3k wouldn't even be a good start towards a 600hp FE. Assuming you had the engine already then I'd say it would get you a good performing 390 in the 375 - 450 hp range. Still you'd have to do your homework and make sure you do it right the first time or you'll miss that mark too. To reach the 600 hp mark I'd venture to say you're in the $12 - $15k range in FE's. That kind of hp is not cheap to start with and FE's take it to a new level...but it's worth it!

You're exactly right, if you read, one of my previous posts mentions the engine I'm seriously looking at building for what I hope will give me those numbers and I'm looking at about $15000 probably more.
well, i know that the 600hp is just a dream at this point, and a i guess i am going to have to increase my budget a bit in order to build the 428 that i want to. thank you for all the help and giving me a good idea on what I can look forward to spending man am i ganna get in trouble with the little lady
You get one of these "desktop dyno" type computer programs. Basically, you put your motor specs in and it spits out HP and torque curves. Or you can just give us the specs and one of us will run it.
you're not going to run the crand 349521 roller on a $3k budget. I've got more than half that in valve train to run the 521 Hyd. roller cam.
Sorry Greg, you're right. I totally forgot the valve train. DUH!!! I didn't even mention anything about valve train in my post. Sorry I fell off my dirtbike pretty hard a couple years ago I guess I'm still feeling the head trauma. LOL
Although cams aren't my strong suit, if he can beef up his budget a little and work on the valves, springs, rockers and all that good stuff. Could make for a fun engine. Maybe you guys can point him in the right direction for this, that is if he feels like adding a little to his budget. If not I'm sure we can come up with something else.

From the info that you all have given me, I am going to beef up my budget, even if my wife gets pissed, and she will

when you say engine specs do you mean .... its a 390 with an edlebrock 1405 and stock intake, duel exhaust with glass packs and no pipe.
thats really all i know about it, havent had it that long

NO problem. As you can see that is kinda a sore subject for me. I rememebr when I made the decision to go with the Hyd. Roller. then I went to Summit and started ordering parts. Next thing I knew I had $1800 in stuff coming to put on/in my $4000 short-block, and that didn't include the Edel heads or intake !!! You can see it here about the 7th picture down: http://www.thedreyerfamily.com/69f250/67f250/fe446.htm
I labeled it a "Divorce in a box" :-)
Erson complete shafts/rockers/stands
Crane- Hydraulic Roller Cam
Crane- Hyd. roller lifters
Crane- Springs, clips and retainers
Erson- rocker shim kit for Edel heads
Edel/ARP- rocker Stand studs
$1800-(if I remember correctly I got this stuff like over night from Summit. Those guys have a great inventory, when you consider how FE specific this stuff is)
Not included- Smith Bros. custom pushrods....
