the d is the decade c=60's, d=70's, e=80's etc. The 3 is is the year it was cast, so the block was cast in 1973. The block should have a casting number by the oil filter adapter.

D3TE block?

While you're checking the date code, look between the freeze plugs on the passenger side, they like to crack there.

I looked at my motor, knowing it has been replaced, and in the front of the block by the oil filter assy it says "66" then right under it says "352" do I have a 352 from 1966 ??

i cant seem to find what them #'s mean in my book but the 352 was on most of the blocks between 352 and 428 for the fact 352 was the first they made

D3TE isn't an indicator of when the block was cast. This is the casting # not the date code. A D3TE block could have been cast as late as 1976.

my big block ford engines by steve christ tells me D3TE stands for 1973, and i have a352 with C3TE and it says that stands for 1963 and them #'s seem to be accurate as the 352 was in a 63, and the 390 was in a 73, so if they dont stand for that then what do they stand for

The casting # just tells you that the block casting was ORIGINALLY cast in that model year, not neccessarily that the block was actually made that year, the date code will tell you exactly when it was cast. The casting # tells you what vehicle the part was originally made for, but not neccessarily that the part came from that vehicle. For instance, the heads that came on all 87-93 Stangs ( casting # E7TE) were originally truck castings and those castings were first made in the 1987 model year. The Christ book and others are well known for their errors also. George Reids books are as well .
