I get a metallic squealing sound on cold start ups as of late, it matches the rpm of the motor, as if something is rubbing for half of each revolution. Only happens for the first 5 seconds or so.
You're probably right. I'm just so paranoid about this truck now. I guess if a serp belt squeals, the only solution is a new belt, since the tension isnt adjustable. I've never had the serp belt slip on either of my other cars, that are both 20 years old, and back then I lived in some damn cold places.
A slipping belt will just glaze over and slip worse. Dressing is only a quick fix (good for the neighbors car, not mine.) I'll quit speculating and find out what is now...
My truck does the same thing...when I took it to my dealer they told me that is something that typically happens. The service rep said contact rust will occasionally form on your pulleys and it takes a little bit to wear off when you start it up. It never squeals after a minute or two so I haven't worried about it.
That's a bull**** excuse from them. Slip happens when the tensioner isn't tight enough. Engineers putting weaker tensioners to get longer belt life at the calculated risk of shortening belt life from slippage.
They calculated wrong apparently. Anyone else have belt slip?
When I worked in bldg maintenance, none of the belts on campus slipped, partly because we had to pay for the belts, and more importantly lots of energy is wasted when a compressor tosses a overheated/cracked belt- because the pneumatic heating valves fail open and the utility bill goes through the roof. It's all about money.
The slipping belts have been a problem on the modular motors since long before they went into trucks, and not much has been done about the problem. It is very annoying. Switching to a Goodyear Gatorback is a huge improvement on Crown Victorias, and I'm guessing that the same will help on the truck applications.
