I attempted to change my steering wheel in my 68 f100 automatic. When I put the new wheel on I could'nt start the engine. What is the skinny on this neutral safety switch? Did I cause something to come loose. I spent an hour trying to put every thing back, but still no luck. Thanks
On mine it's a combo switch down at the bottom of the steering column. It detects when you are in nuetral/park to start the engine and reverse for back up lights. Lossen the two screws and move it around till it will start in park then tighten. Check the back up lights too.

Traditionally, the neutral safety switch is ontop of the steering column in the cab at the firewall. There is a tube which attaches to the column shifter. On that tube is a clip which protrudes out of the steering column and actuates the neutral safety switch. If the blinker assembly was loosened during your steering wheel job the steering column tube is spring loaded and will push up towards the steering wheel. this in turn causes the clip to recede into the column. If care is not taken when pushing the tube back down into the column the clip will come loose and fall into the steering column. At this point, you will be lucky to retrieve the clip. A magnet on the end of a stick may do the trick. After retrieval, simply reattach the clip to the tube and carefully reinsert the tube into the steering column. Note: you probally noticed its impossible to reattach the blinker assembly. Very loosely attach the two T head bolts to the blinker assembly and place the blinker assembly back in place. Tighten the two nuts until the blinker assembly is held firmly in place. Inspect the neutral safety switch to insure that the clip is protruding from the column and in contact with the neutral safety switch arm. if so, your good to go.
Just wanted to say thanks for the helpfull responds. I went and checked the lower steering column and sure enough the switch had been knocked out of place thus causing the no start. So I put the pin back in place and bingo, we got her running again!!! So thanks again for the feedback
