probably because the stock transmission cooling system sucks. get the new tranny in, have the ford dealership add synthetic oil (that you provide for them) and add a fat cooler, you won't have tranny problems.

If it goes out again, after warranty is up and you have to drop the money for it, look into some aftermarket stuff. Brian's Truck Shop has a great reputation and from what I hear, he backs his work if something were to go wrong with it.

You're quite welcome. We were all there once too, but with the help of the forum, learned a lot and made our PSD's better.

You gotta stop frying the auto trannys. These trannys are designed primarily for highway use, where you start out with the torque converter unlocked, run up through the gears, lock the TC at about 43 mph, and drive on in 4th gear. Those detroit engineers never saw a mountain, nor a big towed rig.
When you tow slow up grades at under 40 mph or so your torque converter is unlocked, and the slip that multiplies the torque is heating the tranny fluid like crazy. It barfs all over the road, and the tranny parts overheat and fail. An additiional tranny cooler will help, but the real fix is to either: A swap truck for a manual tranny, or B install a torque converter lockup switch, which manually locks the TC at any speed and eliminates the slip/heatup. Search this forum for the switch description, and while your at it, add the exhaust brake system which uses the EBPV for braking. There are commercial versions of this combination; buy one. Try SPDiesel.com. there are others. Be sure you can set it to lock up the TC at speeds below where you will be towing slow.

You gotta love those engineers that never drive the things they design in the real world - like the clown that set up the 4R100 to unlock the torque converter when you touch the brakes. Why on earth would you want that to happen.

The TC lockup switch is a good idea, but having different trans tuning in the chip is even better. On the DP Tuner chip (and others, I'm sure), it can be tuned to delay the shift to 4th (separating the 4th shift and the TC lockup), to keep the TC locked up in 4th down to 38 even if you use the brakes, AND keep the TC locked in 3rd down to 28, even if you use the brakes.

This would give better driveability and reduce heat-producing slippage ALL the time, and leave the TC lockup switch for when you absolutely need it.

Using a Factory Tech accumulator (an overpriced equivalent of a Sonnax kit) and the DP Tuner shift point and TC lockup tuning, my truck feels MUCH MUCH better than I ever expected an auto trans to feel.

I haven't towed any heavy loads, so I can't tell you about trans temp. Besides, before summer gets here, I'm going to add a big Tru-Cool cooler at the same time I replace my intercooler.
