hi everyone, I have a 1998 ranger 4x4 and am having problems with the transfer case shifting. I have checked all of the obvious things, connection, replaced the motor with a new one from ford, fuses and it still will not shift into gear. When i turn the selector i hear a relay click under the dash, but nothing happens except for the high and low light flashing. there is also no power in the harness on the underside of the truck. Just looking for some advice and wondered if its a simple fix or if it needs to be taken to the shop and hooked to the computer. thanks
Just to make sure, you checked the mini-fuse in the power distribution box under the hood, right?
There is also a relay (probably what you hear clicking) situated in a relay box that is located under/behind the dash to the right of the steering column.
Something else to keep in mind: the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) plays a big role in the operation of the transfer case motor. There are several fuses in the passenger compartment fuse box associated with the GEM that should be checked.
In fact, the GEM stores trouble codes if there are problems with the 4x4 Electronic Shift Control system. Unfortunately, the GEM codes cannot be pulled by most off-the-shelf OBDII code readers. They are special Ford codes.
The system also employs an Electronic Shift Control Module which is located under/behind the center dash.
The following article is geared more toward troubleshooting the vacuum portion of the '98-'00 Ranger PVH 4x4 system, but on pages 29 and 30 you will find the wiring schematic for the Electronic Shift Control system which may be useful to you:
Yeah i checked all of the fuses under the hood and also in the fuse block inside the cab. Is the control module you are talking about located on the right had side behind the radio? Also are they know to fail alot? I appreciate the input
well checked the shift module today and that seems to be the problem, popped the cover off and it was smoked, the relays were burnt to a crisp. Ordered the new one today will be here on Wednesday. Should fix the problem im hoping... ! last question though will i have to have the Gem reset after i replace this part?? thanks for all the help
