SnapOn makes a sparkplug socket for the 5.4 modular engine (application- Mustang) 9/16 hex. Does the V10 use the same socket and have 9/16 hex sparkplugs?
TIA Doug
All the modulars use the "peanut" plug as we used to know them as. And it's not 9/16, it's 5/8ths. All parts stores carry them. One of the old plugs used to be HUGE and one small, aka peanut.
Spark plug sockets have a rubber boot in them to hold onto the plug so it doesn't just fall out like it would in a regular socket.
and i thought my harley had a odd sized spark plug hex size. whats next mini spark plugs? like on a model air plane motor. i have enough tools allready 2 very big rollers full of them
WOW, delete my post, doesn't seem to be an "edit" button. I have never heard of a 9/16 plug in 20 yrs of back yard mechanicing (is that really a word ).
I just checked my 05 and, yep it's 9/16's. Without the plug socket, you'll never get it out of the hole. Weird..... Niche market for plug sockets and plugs, bet Ford want's tons-o-money for these plugs like the 05+ air filter at $40+ each!!!
Why would Ford do this when all the past modulars that I've owned (01 Lightning, 98 GT, 01 GT) all use 5/8's along with the 03 and 04 Focus 2.3 PZEVs.
Last night I was reading a Motor Trend magazine from the 60's. They were talking about how GM was starting to use tiny 5/8" socket size spark plugs so they would have more room for cooling passages. They figured that 13/16" spark plug sockets would be starting to collect dust. They were right.
Ford started using the 9/16" plugs for more room for cooling passages, to make room for better flowing ports and so they could fit the spark plug where they wanted to in the combustion chamber easier.
