my airbag light has been on for sometime and I took my truck over to the dealership to get a estimate. They want $167 to replace the watch spring behind the steering wheel airbag, is this reasonable? could I do it myself??
It's a fairly easy replacement if you have a steering wheel puller, Once you remove the steering wheel the "Clock" spring is right there clipped onto the colum. Most importantly UNHOOK BOTH BATTERYS and wait a few minutes for all power to drain or you might set off the airbag. Or $167 doesn't sound too far off, I don't know what the ford springs cost but I know the dodges are about $100 just for the part.
The spring is around 90-100 depending on the dealer markup. If you have a wheel puller do it yourself. It's very simple. There is a writeup on the site here too I believe.
No way you can mess it up. Don't let the word spring fool you. It's actually an enclosed rotating assembly. It bolts to the column wih 3 screws and has 2-3 connectors on it. It's basically fool proof. No springs will pop out at ya, if that's what you're thinking!

Actually, you don't even need a steering wheel puller to do it. Disconnect both batteries and wait one minute. Depress the brake pedal for ten seconds to kill any remaining backup power to the RCM (restraint control module). Remove the driver's air bag from the steering wheel. Remove the big nut holding the wheel to the steering shaft, then grasp the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock. With some serious, even tugging and the occassional slight rock side to side, it should pop off in your hands. The clock spring is mounted right behind it, but you will have to remove the column shroud to access all the screws.
