cork gaskets?!?!?

i just bought and installed new cork gaskets on my 1987 bronco II. im not sure if its leaking still, or just burning off the oil that has been on there from the start. I was talking to a friend, and he told me you most remove the little metal inserts inside the holes for the bolt on the cork gasket. Well now im a little mad sence i did all that work for nothing. Has anyone who has used the cork gasket left thodse little metal rings in and had a sucsessful results?? I really dont want to do this again... but if i have to then so be it.

P.s. There is nothing on the box saying you must remove them at all, and there was no instructions inside the box with the gaskets ethier. This is just hear say and i want to besure of what i need to do. I may look at it over agian tommoro to see if its leaking still

Reminder- i replaced the ever known valve cover gaskets that always leak ( i forgot to specify above), i was told cork gaskets where the best way to go.

You do not remove the metal inserts, they are there so you don't crush the cork gasket.

I think I already told you my opinion on the valve covers gaskets.

If you cleaned everything good the only place that should have oil is the exhaust manifold and that will burn off in a few days if you get them good and hot.

thank god i was worried there for a while. So the oil will burn off in days?..good somthing to check up on, it loooked like it was smoking more then it was before but its most likely oil that spilled on when i took off the cover. There was some oil pooled up in a crevis near the intake manifold that i saw after i put the new gaskets on and started her up. I sopped that up and kepp it running for about 10 more mins and he crevis was dry as i left it, which is a good sign. I followed what you sed, clean off the areas good and used minimal RTV and used all the load spacers and i think that did it. I was driving in cicles in my yard ( as you know i dont have my permit yet, ill be 16 soon though) then checking up and still no oil to be found so i think i controled the leak A friend told me to remove the washers... luckly it was after i put them in so there in there now wih them on. Ill keep driving and running it and see if it burns off. Thanks for the help

I forgot that it's not on the road yet so it may take a little longer, the exhaust manifold won't get a hot as it would if you took it on a 20-30 mile drive.
