chilton book shows nothing. internet research shows nothing.
well im finally sick and tired of my pan leaking. ive replaced the gasket before, but it still leaks because all i can do is:
overtighten it (which destroys the cork gasket and makes it leak)
or
undertighten it (which makes it not seal all the way and leak. then let the gasket get nice and soaked and tighten it a little more each day and watch the gasket crumble before my eyes)
or
put a whole tube of rtv silicone everywhere making a huge mess. (which doesnt work either).
the cork type gasket is all i can find! i would pay such good money for a hard rubber gasket.
is there a specific torque specification for each one of these 17 1/2" bolts? spending the money on a quart of tranny fluid every 2 weeks, plus having it leak all over the place and forgetting and then it running dangerously low on fluid is getting old fast! torque sequence as well please.
id like to know this as well since this one is leaking, but upon further inspection it looks to me like its leaking from the shift linkage input to the tranny. It leaks down about an inch then works its way around the seam on the pan making it look like the pan was leaking. Maybe worth a look.
12-16 ft/lbs. I will only use cork gaskets. Heres what you do. Make sure your pan gasket surface is straight, put a light film of silicone on the pan and put the gasket on. Let it set up so the gasket wont fall off the pan. Install the pan, torque all the bolts to 12ftlbs and leave it. Dont drive it yet. Let it set overnight, and let the cork gasket compress. The next morning torque the pan bolts to 16ftlbs and you should be good to go. Cork gaskets work really well once they reach their squish area. Its the same with valve cover gaskets. I have used the same cork valve cover gaskets on my 57 chevy for 3 different motors and numerous valve adjustments.
wow, thanks hanker. i'll do exactly that and follow your instructions and let you know how it goes. rbaker i would not doubt it if the flanges are a bit bent, i'll do that too. and shift, yeah i looked at the linkage and its not leaking there, the pan is totally the culprit. wow great replies. hanker, after i torque them to 12ftlbs will i fill it up before letting it sit overnite? or not fill it up till the next morning when i torque them to 16ftlbs?
