I have a 97 F350 PSD and was thinking about equipping it with an intercooler. My question is, will a 99 7.3 intercooler setup work for my pick-up, what mods would have to be done? The kits are pricey and was wondering if there is a more cost effective way to install an intercooler. I found a pipe kit for bout $600 and it required a radiator to be purchaced. Any advice would be appreciated.
if you can weld you can also get the pipes from a superduty and do your modifications as needed. i got 2 header "u"and that was enough extra pipe and bends to do what was needed.
I chose to put a 2001 intercooler in my '95 F-250 and it works very well. I did go with the GTS kit (from the above link) and the parts are good quality, and allows the Superduty intercoolers to fit very well.
There IS a link on the above GTS website as well, on the work involved and how to go about doing it as well. You can always give Geoff a call too, as he's a very helpful guy!
Also, just so you know, there are several guys who also have the 6.0 L Powerstroke intercoolers in their trucks too, as they are somewhat larger than the previous 7.3 intercoolers. Often though, you can get the aluminized tank intercoolers from the 7.3 Superduties, but the 6.0 L Powerstroke intercoolers are a plastic tanked intercooler, and the odd one has failed from high boost after adding extensive modifications. If you plan on running stock or even with a chip or programmer I'm sure you'd be fine, but if you move up to mods that give high boost levels, perhaps an aluminum tanked intercooler may be a better choice.
