To releave the fuel presure there is a small electrical connector on the passenger side floor board near the radio antenna. Disconnect the plug and run the truck until it runs out of fuel (about 5 secs.). Then your all set...
On a 92 XLT 4X4 the filter is onside of a steel bracket that has one bolt. Remove bolt and whole bracket comes loose with filter inside. Fuel lines are still a bummer to get off.
How do you know if you need a fuel filter? I was just reading about this in the Haynes manual and they say you should never need to replace the filter. (Although it was early this morning so maybe I read it wrong! I will re-read it when I get home)
Maybe I'm getting too old but I swear I read recently in my Hayne's manual that "some models" of Explorers have a fuel filter removal tool located under the truck near the fuel filter. I just re-read the manual and can't find the info again
I bought my first set of filter removal tools from Auto Zone. I recently bought another set (can't find my old set) from Pep Boys. I had to keep asking until I found an employee who knew what I was talking about.
To aplustechnician: Hayne's says the fuel filter is designed to last the life of the engine but they don't say how long that life is. With so many Explorers with the 4.0 OHV engine still running at over 300,000 miles I don't consider that statement valid. I change my fuel filters at easy to remember intervals: every 100,000 miles whether it needs it or not.
I was told to change the fuel filter every year for maintenance purposes this comes from the service dept. at FORD so maybe a line of crap but anyways $15.00 isnt a bad investment to keep the truck running good!
