Auxillary fuel tank

My 71 F-350 is a dually 1 ton dump with short dual exhausts. I really want to get rid of the behind the seat fuel tank and put a saddle style tank on the outside. Northern Hydraulics has a universal tank , will this work or is there a better alternative? I know the truck had some kind of auxillary tank gas ,the transfer switch was in the floor by the drivers left foot. Did this tank mount under the cab?

Auxillary fuel tank

Greg,

I believe that the aux fuel tank was located between the frame rails back behind the rear axle. I think "Camper specials" had this tank. I have a 1970 F-250 4x4 and have been searching for one of these tanks for some time without success. The problem is, the frame rail width is 34 inch's on 67-72 models. In 73 they went 4 inches wider.
I have heard that some 60's Mustang tanks MAY work but, I have not got that desperate yet. Your mileage may vary....

Hi fellas,
J.C. Whitneys all Ford Magazine has what looks like every tank, and then some, available for the old Fords. You can order the catalog free at there site.

The aux tanks on these years was actually attached to the left inside frame rail starting at about the front of the bed and running back around four feet. I've yet to see an aftermarket listed for these particular applications, but you can always head to the junk yards or as the previous poster mentioned, Whitney has pictures of their tanks and the side mount tank for 73+ looks exactly like the aux tank on my '68 Camper Special.

I'm not clear. Does the auxiliary tank fit between the frame rails, or "side saddle" style between the frame rail and the bed wall. I've been trying to figure out how to relocate my tank from the cab, and my truck seems to have plenty of room for side saddle tanks outside the rails and forward of the rear wheels. Mounting between the frame rails forward of the axle looks a lot more difficult due to the location of the driveshaft, exhaust, and parking brake cables. I'm not sure I can see how a tank would even fit there. If you have one there, can you measure it and post the dimensions? Even better, post a picture of how it is mounted? I haven't been able to find one.

Aero tanks does have a universal cylinder style saddle tank. It is $580.00, wow, but is not in the catalogue or web site. My motor has a mechanical fuel pump, do you need another one at the tank also? Will I need to modify the tail pipe ends , they exit just aft of the cab between the frame rails.

KDS, the aux tank fits BETWEEN the frame rails. There is plenty of room between the left rail and the drive shaft, provided you don't have dual exhaust piping in the way. The tank measures approximately 18"X48" (from memory). Find a JC Whitney catalog, look up gas tanks and the frame rail mounted application for 73+ Ford trucks looks just like the original applications in the '67-'72's. If you mount one there you'll need the stone shield and filler components as well. That's why I say find one in a junk yard and salvage it, or at least pull all the mounting/installation parts.

Thanks for the info. I've been checking the boneyards near me periodically, but I've only been looking at 67-72 models. I'll start looking for 73+ ones and see what I can find.

Another question -- is it possible to mount two aux tanks (one on each frame rail) by reversing the one on the right?

Buzzard- What to do with the dual exhaust if I go with the JC Whitney between the rail job. It is a lot less $$. Could have used the extra gallons today !!!

KSD, I don't think you'd be able to mount a "second" aux tank on the right side...that's where your exhaust piping is run.

Greg, I guess you've gotta have the duals run down the right side...that's what I did on my '68. It's a very tight fit up to the mufflers (because of the transmission) but not bad past the mufflers.

Buzzard- I haven't been under the truck in a while as things have been running real well lately but how is the PTO shaft going to gum up the concept ?

Auxillary fuel tank

I've pulled the auxillary gas tank off My 69 F250 and will not be reinstalling it. I'll probably build a flat bed and put something up there. For now I'm using the tank behind the seat. Anyway, I've got some parts here in central Texas (Tank, cover etc.).

I'm about to get a new exhaust system, anyway. I currently have a single rotten 2" exhaust connected to stock manifolds, with leaks between the manifold and block and in a few places from the pipes. I'm planning on using the setup someone else described in here with dual mufflers under the cab and outlet pipes that run outside the frame rails to tips just in front of the rear tires. That would let me use all the space between the rails for twin aux tanks, right?
