Which positions of the heat/AC switch should the AC compressor turn on. I can hear my A/C compressor turn on when I have the switch set to mix and defrost with the temp set for max heat. It doesn't seem right that it should be turning on when I want hot air.

Yes it does, if you want hot DRY air. If you have hot WET air, the defrost won't work too well. The A/C removes moisture from the air before it hits the windshield.
auto manuf's have been using A/C on with defrost for dry air for years...also exercises compressor and spreads A/C lubricant around system, critical for long compressor life
kinda a toss up though....here in Pacific NW we have to run the defrost thru the whole winter....sucks gas>good for oil companies...and spins that compressor for extra months wearing it out, good for compressor manuf.s
the poor guys in La La Land and Hurricane Paradise never run A/C defrost all winter long, turn on in May and rattle rattle bang clunk
Not true, if the compressor is not used in the winter, then the oil will drain off the moving parts, and when you start it back up again in the summer. The result is leaks, and worn compressor seals. You could do the same thing to a car by letting it sit in a lot for a year, then starting it up and driveing it like you stole it without warming it up first.
I heard my ac compressor cycle on and off when I was doing my first SEAFOAM yesterday. Thanks Doug5G for asking that one. This is the only forum I have ever been on that can answer my questions BEFORE I even ASK them. Great Forum with GREAT MEMBERS. Thanks to all.
