Before I commit to a floor shift or a column shift in my 56 I though I better ask the experts about the problems of connecting a column shift (like an ididit or flaming river). Is this something that is going to be difficult to do or are there kits or connectors available? I assume a floor shift would be no problem but I'm not sure that's the way I want to go. Thanks for any input,
The column suppliers can supply a linkage kit for most any popular tranny I'm quite sure. It's just a matter of the arm on the column shift matching the cable throw needed by the transmission and the right indicator markings for the column. The floor shift looks sexier tho!
Lokar lists this on their site: <TABLE borderColor=#ffffff borderColorDark=#ffffff width="100%" borderColorLight=#4e4e4e border=1 mm_noconvert="TRUE"><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17><TD style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17>ACA-1801</TD><TD>ADJUSTABLE BILLET COLUMN ARM KIT C-4/C-6 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
They do not list one for an AOD. I wonder if you could adapt the factory column parts to shift one from your new column? (I think) most AODs are cable shifted anyway.
I have a Lokar column shift kit for a GM (sorry, I had to say that) tranny. Talking with their tech guys I found that they do not plan to offer a kit specifically for the AOD, but that "some guy" bought this kit and made it work.
I took a look at it and measured some things. To fit the kit I've removed the pivot pin and plastic bushing from the stock AOD shift lever. I measured it all to make a new bushing/adapter that will allow the Lokar cable attach thing to be bolted into the hole of the stock AOD lever. Then I lost the measurements. So, I could go out into the garage and measure it all again and get back with a quicky sketch if anyone's interested. It would be a machined flat head sort of pin with a through hole and a large washer. The Lokar cable attach thing would bolt through the bushing and hold it all together.
I have a AOD with a Flaming River column shift. I made the shift link out of 1/4 rod with the lokar hime (spelling) joints treaded to each end (removed a lokar floor shift when I replaced the FMX trans).
In my case I had to modify the trans lever (it was for a floor shift) to get it to match the standard column shift indicator.
Just a little trial and error it's really no big deal. If you would like I can try and take some pictures in the morning.

thats pretty much what i was thinking there is 2 different aod setups one rod and one cable. and niether are really sold as a kit for the aod specifically. i would love to see the pics
I am going to admit stupidity and ask....What does that mean and where did it come from?
I think several of us would like to see sketches if you have time. Anyone with pics or schetches of a AOD shifter hooked to a non factory column would be great.
I'll chime in here because I used a heihm [sp?] joint as well!
I wanted to use the column shifter because I liked the esthetics and wanted the leg room for a third passenger.
I was using a Chryco column and an AOD with a floor mounted cable shifter from an '86 Lincoln MK VII.
SO after trying to use the stock FOMOCO cable and finding it wasn't going to adapt well in my application I got several opinions from the neighbourhood here.
Had to fabricate a short arced shape piece of flat stock taht fit between the heihm joint and the bottom of the column to get the right throw. I went threw a 1/2 dozen hard board templates before cutting the metal and if I remember correctly it took two attempts in metal...but that just 'cause I'm best at the learn by doing trial and error school of fixin'
It took some trial and error but it is working well.
BTW the heihm joint was given to me by an old hot rodder...told me it was from a Hobart Industrial dishwasher . Somehow that really appealed to me

This thread has helped me. For good pix go to lokar.com. I have not mocked up for the linkage yet. I have a 75 T Bird column (modified) and need to shift a 700R4. Has anyone done a rod linkage with the 700R4?
