chipping 1993??
friend has a 1993 F250 with the pre-powerstroke 7.3L. he was told that it's a late 1993 motor. wants to know if he can chip that motor or increase the performance a little for better fuel mileage and power. no heavy towing at all, just a work truck.
i have a 2003 7.3L that i have an edge evolution in, but i don't know anything about the pre-powerstrokes.

TJ s right, chips do stuff to the computer, our old trucks dont have em, bout the only way u can get more power out of an old diesel like that is to turbo it. Try lookin for info on Banks and ATS turbo kits.

Until 94.5, it is very possible. What he has is called an IDI, InDirect Injection, a prepowerstroke motor. Some came factory turbo, some did not. These are totally mechanical controlled motors, the trans can be electronic controlled, but it has nothing to do with the motor itself.

Basically in the powerstroke the computer controls the injection process, if you search throug the forum you can find a thread talking about the subject. But yes they did come stock with turbos but no computer.....the turbo is probably n ATS if its the actual stock turbo, im not sure if that was a wastegated turbo or not but i dont think it was. A wastgated turbo would be better than the non wastegated turbo.Also if your friend wants more power, try getting better flowing exhaust system. Somethin with 3 in. pipe or bigger, if he has a turbo there is no need for a restricting muffler so a straight pipe will do.
