i am having a pesky fuel issue. it seems that when i lean it out too much it blows white smoke. whats with that? if i richen it up a little it is fine until the next day then it blows a cloud of black smoke. i am running the timing about 15 BTDC could too much timing be causing a incomplete burn?
yeah hazy white smoke and the plugs were bleach white. now the white smoke is back along with the black smoke. the plugs went from white to charcoal black. the gap is .050. do you think the carb is way out of wack (again) . i started it today and it chugged when you gave it gas and did not want to rev. i leaned out the carb a little and it was fine. i am running a 2bbl 2150 carb. i did notice black oil dots on a few of the plugs.
well guys its not looking pretty. the pcv was not the culprit just part of a growing problem. did a compression test and got 185 on all 7 then tried cylinder number 2 and barely 90. i think i may have blown a head gasket. this really stinks. i am pulling it now. i just started it again and a rod knock appeared. i wonder if water got in there and bent the rod? if its bad and the bore is screwed i will have to go out a find a rebuildable FE ASAP. i have less than 1,000 miles on this engine the last engine died from c clip failure on the wrist pin. it died with the same sounds , which scares me. i will keep you posted.
sorry to here your troubles Gashog... I've been reading Steve Christ's book a little veryday now and have to admit I think I'll be rebuilding my engine if and when it goes just because this book has me inspired. Lots of choices with this thing.. I had no idea...Keep a clear head and keep us posted.. BOL Redman
it died with the same sounds , which scares me. i will keep you posted.
Why wait 'till now to hydro-lock? Check the oil for contamination after finding the problem cylinder?
I understand the feeling all too well! Keep us posted.
Coolant was my first thought on the white smoke. Just didn't think to ask if you had compression problems or blown headgasket. With it running really lean/hot, I would suppose it would make it worse. The excessive fuel problem was trying to cover it up.
Glad to hear you figured it out....though it's not what you wanted to hear.
Ouch... I'd take it apart now rather than wait for something to break.
I've heard engines that sounded like rod knock, but was in fact just rod side clearance. You dont really notice it unless you're listening for it. Lets hope that's what it is.
well i was a little frustrated at this today, so i figured i had nothing to lose and kept running the engine. i decided to listen for that sound. it sounded like a hammer hitting a anvil. i decided to try reducing the timing and it went away. so it may be the 3 month old fuel which caused some pinging issues.
the bad news. i pulled the engine and took it apart. there is no rings left on the number 2 cylinder! another nice thing was i drained 16 quarts of oil from a 13 quart pan hummm? turns out my new fuel pump has a hole the size of a pen head in it. the bearings and done to copper. i think the fuel dillution issue has ruined this engine. the rest of the rings were pretty shot as well but the number 2 was the worst. so i need to find another FE to rebuild. I will have to do a budget rebuild because i am in the poor house with this last rebuild and have no more to blow. well it was a fun 1,000 miles
Well thats just the pitts man... I notice on craigs list FE stuff for sale cheap all the time out here in CA mostly up north Sacramento'ish matter of fact I know where a 390 from a Torino is with a C6 if he hasn't sold it... motor 200.00 wanted 500.00 obo for package Corona, CA
You need a shirt to get in and not spit chew, no shotguns allowed.
Man that's the craps with cost and labor then come up wounded. We ran oil dilution, gas in oil to start 2800 Pratts in Alaska.
