i've been searching the threads for this problem but i can't seem to find anyone who's had it before, so here we go.
i've been doing a lot of rust maintenance lately to prepare the truck for priming and painting and i've run into a problem in the door and door jamb seams. rust has bubbled out from under the seam sealer. i've been knocking out the sealer and using a dremel to grind what rust i can out of the seams.
i'm planning on grinding down as much as i can without compromising the seam, apply a generous coat of rust converter to get the rest, then putting down new beads of seam sealer. is there anything i'm missing? i don't want to have the rust come back at a later date.
on a side note, is there a name for the type of rust that i'm seeing here? it's not surface rust, and it's not rust that has attacked and eaten away the edge of the material. it's the kind of rust that pits onto the surface of the metal and leaves a black, carbon-like deposit than can be chipped away, revealing a pitted surface. it also seems to 'bloom' into a cauliflower-like shape when allowed to grow. i've only seen this kind of rust once before: on 12" fire suppression system valves that stay submerged.
can't remember what brand it is. small (prob about 8oz) bottle. leaves behind a hard, black primer. got it at autozone. it's pretty liquidy, you just brush it on or dab it into harder-to-reach areas.
Cool thanks for the info. I would like to do some door seam repair on my 97 one day fairly soon, so I am just acquiring as much info as I can, whenever I can
