I've got a 98 Explorer Sport and the driver's side door will not open and close properly. Every time I try to close the door I have to use a screwdriver to pry up the latch (as I'm raising the handle). I don't know much (or anything) about car repairs but don't have a lot of money to pay a repair shop. Does this sound like something I could do myself? If so, how would I go about doing this?
Sounds like maybe you broke the springs in your handle or maybe the linkage in the door is bent. I had something similar happen to my '98 Sport.
Depending on how confident you are it's possible to repair yourself if that's the problem. It requires removing the door panel and drilling out the handle rivots. I would make sure that's your problem though, and picking up a Chilton's will help you out. I used a Haynes but the pictures and directions seem to be better in Chiltons if you can find them. Goodluck
Clean the latch mechanism with electronics cleaner really well too. The latch could be gunked up so much it's hanging up. Then spray lube at every oil change.
A body shop may take some mercy on you and fix this for next to nothing if you are not confident in doing it yourself. IT's really not that difficult complexity wise but it can be a pain to access.
