I am looking to put a cool air intake in my 97 f250 psd. Was wondering which brand is the best for my truck. My main goals are to give it more turbo whine, more power, and better fuel mileage. I was kinda looking at the K & N air intake. Also are they easy to install? Thanks
We just got new pricing for 2006 from AFE and their Stage II Pro Guard systemn for the 1st gen trucks has come waaaay down. Quite a good value and we have a FTE speical on them right now too. Call us if you have any questions etc.
Was looking at the AFE intake system.... what is the difference between AFE Stage 2 and AFE Stage 2 with pro Guard 7? Other than about $50?
Also how does the AFE compare with K & N and other brands? Thanks....
The Pro Guard 7 is a diesel specific filter that stops the dirt the 4 layer filters let into the engine. We are BIG believers in PG7, go to www.proguard7.com for specs etc. Here's some info on other 4 layer filters from and independent test on a diesel, you'll se why PG 7 rates so well with us at DPPI. Call us if you have any questions etc, we'll be glad to help you.
The following is the complete test results. In order of rank from BEST performance to WORST in the categories of FILTERING EFFICIENCY, FLOW RESTRICTION, DIRT HOLDING CAPACITY and TOTAL DIRT PASSING THE FILTER DURING TEST.

In the order of filtering efficiency the results are:
FILTER % Efficiency
AC Delco OE 99.93%
Baldwin 99.72%
No name filter (made for gas engine, 1/3 less pleats) 99.32%
AFE ProGuard 7 (73-10062), panel filter 99.23%
WIX/Napa 99.03%
Purolator 98.73%
Amsoil, new style 98.63%
UNI 97.93%
K&N 96.80%
FLOW RESTRICTION FROM BEST TO WORST:
FILTER RESTRICTION in Inches H2O
K&N 4.54
Mystery bargain filter 4.78
AFE Pro Guard 7 Panel 4.99
Purolator 5.05
WIX/Napa 5.06
UNI 5.40
Baldwin 5.71
Amsoil 5.88
AC Delco 6.23
TOTAL DIRT PASSING THE FILTER DURING THE TEST. This is how much dirt your engine will take in if you use the filter for the duration that would cause the filter to become "dirty" enough to need replacement or cleaning. The "Dirt Passing The Filter" is the dirt collected by the "Post Filter" during the test.
FILTER DIRT IN GRAMS PASSED
AC Delco 0.4 g
Baldwin 1.1g
AFE Pro Guard 7 1.8g
Mystery Bargain 2.4g
Amsoil 2.7g
WIX/Napa 4.4g
Purolator 5.0g
K&N 6.0g
UNI 7.9g
Note: The Purolator was reported to have a seal malfunction during the test and passed more dirt than it would have with a good seal.

How does the AFE compare to the Tymar system, both for performance and price? I have a 1996 F350 Powerstroke that has a stock air intake, and I am thinking of upgrading. I use it mainly for towing a 5th wheel travel trailer. Thanks!
I changed my stock intake to the K&N FIPK and I have noticed a big difference. Normal driving, occassional towing - no high performance needs here. About $225.00 delivered, and about 1 hour to assemble and install - very easy.
the AFE has the steel powder coated heat shield that seals to the hood when closed to keep the intake air charge as cold as possible. Others just lay a filter in the engine compartment next to hot underhood air. You already don't have an intercooler on a 1st generation so you sure don't want to make it worse with more heat etc.
