Are cool air intakes worth buying for my 1995 5.8L? It has 208,000kms on it, runs good and this summer I was getting 18 mpg. It has stock exhaust but eventually I will change that as well if it will increase anything.
Holy crap! 18mpg with a 5.8L?! That's unheard of!!
If you're looking for a cold air intake stick with the stock box. Some improvements that you can make to your current setup would be to swap the intake tube (the one that pulls air from above the grill), with one from a 300/460 (they have the same tube). This tube is larger and flows more air. Also you can use a better flowing drop in filter like a k&n or a DryFlow filter. Lastly, insulate the tubes that carry the air from the box to the throttle body, that will make a big difference.
The cold air kits with the conical filters are not any good. They just suck in hot air from under the hood and make more noise. I would like to add that some people on this site have fabricated their own setups to make those kits bring in colder air, but if you just install one without making provisions to bring outside air to the filter, it will suck.
The factory setup is a better example of a cold air intake than a exposed element filter that sucks in a bunch of hot under-hood air. I have heard the air intake ducts from the 460s and 300s are better than the ones the 351s and 302s are equiped with. I will be ordering one soon, they will mount up to the airbox you already have. Go to directfordparts.com, they sell them for $14.01. I am ordering one tomorrow. I would say that installing one of those ducts and a K&N filter would bring in colder, denser air than those "cold air intakes" that are so popular.
Hay guy's
Thanks for the input.I held on to the directfordparts link till now. I tried to order the intake but it turns out they don't ship over the border. I sent them an e-mail so I could vent a little. I hate filling out forms to find out @ the end it was a waste of time.
