Ouch, that sucks. I went over the only toll bridge in Fargo, ND. I was kinda mad, since I had to dig 75 cents out of my ash tray. That and I didn't even know the bridge was there until I was on it. grr
The tolls here vary depending on how far you travel. My daily route is about 30 miles one way and the toll is .80, I have a K-tag (the aforementioned electronic device) and because I prepay it, I get 10% off all my tolls. At .16 a day, it can add up pretty quickly.
The Kingsbury Grade, now part of hwy 50 going from Carson City to Placerville (and points west,) was a private toll road back in 1850. Two guys built the road because there wasn't any way for wagons to get over the mountain. They charged five bucks! It's free now and that's what I call progress.
No tolls here in ks where i am, well, one i know of but that's the one Flip4Ford mentioned, i can't remember how much it is, depends on when you get off the road.
heading to florida tomorrow, going to love that turnpike!
I've been up and down both coasts of Florida pretty much my whole life, and have only been on the turnpike once. I think you can go anywhere in the stae without getting on it. 'course I may be wrong (that's been known to happen on occassion). Where you going, anyway?
We have tolls on a few of the bridges around here. Speed pass is cheaper to use, and still quicker. I don't travel those routes, so I don't pay for any tolls. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel costs $12 each way- return trip is free if it is w/in 24 hours. I've only been across it (and back)twice in 17 years.
Those of you who use EZpass type devices, just think about how they are logging how many times you use the toll road/bridge, what times, and all kinds of good stuff like that.

Right, like how fast you just drove through that toll road/bridge.

That's a given, but in order to get it you have to give the a ton of info already--credit card #, license plate, type of car...etc.
All the EZPass does is send the signal to the center that the unit that is registered to your info has just passed under a transmitter at a toll. I don't think that they check speed, but I still slow down. If they really wanted to, they could compare times and see that I was speeding, but they're barely afloat. They should worry about their $$$ before they worry about where I'm going. There's also cameras at every toll (near me at least) so even without the EZPass they could figure out where I was when.
Your cell phone can give you away as well as credit card purchases too. If I were a conspiracy nut or doing something wrong, then I'd rather not use it, but I live where I have to pass through a $3 toll everyday, sometimes a few a day. It's just not a concern of mine, but I guess I could see where someone would worry.
Ben,
Doncha just love the local govt. around here; sales tax here, toll increase there, DMV fees off the charts, housing...well, you know. Kinda makes ya wonder what the he11 we're doing here. I'm out in the east bay and can't wait to be formerly from CA.

They're increasing our tolls for the Bay Area bridges to $4.00. We're already paying 5 bucks to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. So what yer paying?
The electronic devices usually offer a discount because it is much cheaper and faster to administer that system than to have a person sitting in a toll booth even an automated one. Even if the electronic toll lanes are slow they are handling many more vehicles per hour than the pay as you go lanes which reduces costs for the bridge or road operator. The electronic discount does not reflect the true cost savings, the operator keeps some of the savings.
