Well, you need to give us a little more to work with. What year, OHV or SOHC, what do you want to use it for (street/off-road), budget constraints, etc? There's not a huge aftermarket for the 4.0 compared to other motors, but you can still find performance enhancement/replacement items ranging from better air filters all the way to superchargers & nitrous.
I went with K&N filter and Flowmaster as engine upgrades. K&N was slightly noticeable, nothing major though. The Flowmaster really made a difference and gave it more pep. Rebturtle is right, we need more details.
If you got a stick, a Hurst will make shifting much nicer.
-Interesting. I'll have to check into that one myself. Here's what I have done (so far):
K&N air filter
Remove the baffle in the airbox
Bosch +4 plugs
BBK 66mm throttle body
Jet Performance MAF sensor (yesterday!)
Now that I have better airflow coming in, it's time to help the air get out. The next two mods will be a JBA cat-back exhaust and JBA headers - in that order. The last mod I will make is to custom order an (SCT) tuner that can adjust the engine to make the best use of all of these combined modifications.
The mods I have made so far have all been worthwhile, but none of them stood out as "the" best mod. I definately have more power, especially off the line. Removing the baffle from the airbox was the coolest because (A) It was free, and (B) It makes it sound like you have a really nice exhaust when you put your foot in it!
Okay, that helps. Anything after 2000 is a OHC/SOHC motor, which means you already have at least 40 more horses than I do from the factory. You can perform the same mods, but the part #s will probably be different. I like Summit racing's website. You tell them the exact year, make & model you have, and they only show the parts that fit. You can store items in a wish list too, so you don't have to look them up again later when you finally have the money to get the next part.
What are some superchargers or turbo chargers for these rangers. I hve a 01 4.0L SOHC. i would like to put on eof those on my ranger. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
There aren't currently any kits (that I know of) for the 4.0L. You have to take a base supercharger and adapt it to your configuration. It's not a task for the mechanically meek, to be sure.
What's this baffle in the air box? Might pull that out myself if I can find it.
Inside the bottom half of the air filter airbox, there is a baffle that connects to the cold air intake, and extends about 4" into the airbox. It is only there for noise reduction, but is the smallest diameter point in the intake system. It looked like it should pop right out the front of the airbox if you could get the airbox bottom removed from the inner fender, which I could not. After 15 minutes of tugging & cursing, I resorted to the sawzall! You should notice a little more pep, and a nice throaty rumble when you open the throttle under load!

Eh the Flowmaster covers that quite nicely! But I'll be pullin' that out tommorow, give me somethin' else to show off at the party tomm. night, thanks for fillin' me in reb!
