I wen't to start it sunday and it would just crank,no smoke & the tack is showing 450-500 rpm's. Tried starting it a couple of times and nothing. Then on the 3rd time, it started right up. Then Monday, same thing, wouldn't start. Changed the fuel filter MOnday night, and it fired right up immediately, which I thought odd. Tuesday it wouldn't start again. Pulled the fuel filter to look at it and everything looked fine, put it back on and it started right up. Ran some errands and the thing was running like a top. Tried to start it Tuesday night again, and nothing! The truck is in a warm garage, the glow plugs are cycling, and everything seems to be working, except I'm not getting any fuel through it. Going to change the fuel filter again and see what happens...again. Anyone got any ideas???? Al
I doubt it's your fuel filter this time, but what it could be eludes me.
Any chance of getting the truck scanned with a good scanner that will do Ford enhanced codes, not one of those basic ones.
I'D HAVE TO TOW IT TO FORD TO GET that done , may have to this has got me stumped...I have 7 diesel motors but this thing is somthing else . By the way it's 2001 with 54000 miles

Smells like a CPS...i saw his report of tach movement but i still think we have an intermittent CPS. Is it necesarily cast in stone that if the tach moves the CPS is good? Can anyone confirm that?

I had the exact same thing happening and the fuel pump on the rail(frame) was running intermittently. I didnt know this would cause this symptom but it did on mine. Sometimes when I cycled the glow plugs cold I wouldnt here the pump run then it wouldnt start. After several key cycles the pump would kick on and start right up. Warm or cold, even after stopping for fuel. Hope this helps.
Good point psnut. I was also wandering if I should be smelling fuel at the pipe when cranking if it is the cps. I asked the ford place this twice & and got two answers.
Also i did check all related fuses ,I think . All this elec. stuff is baffling to me.

Well I need to find a place to put a gauge on it .I'm not to familiar with this truck yet.Would that show up on a scan if it was working at the time? You guys are great .Now to see about that gauge tonight.

You don't necessarily need a guage to know if you have fuel or not. Do you hear the pump running when you turn on the ignition? The pump is the small electric motor looking object mounted in the frame directly under the drivers seat in the frame of the truck. If it's running, you have fuel.
You might also check the electrical connections at the fuel pump. If they're corroded, damaged, loose, or something not right, it could cause a problem with the fuel pump.
The connections look clean, but as far as hearing the pump run it's hard to tell .I can feel it run but it doesn't make much noise . Do they cycle with just the key on? It still starts on occasion ,kind of leery about driving it to ford .I don't want to get stranded right now , to dang cold for this kind of fun [-25 deg].

It will cycle every time you turn on the key to start the truck, but only for 10-20 seconds if you don't start the truck. And, once it's started, it should run continously. They will not cycle unless the key is turned on.
