yet another problem....
the other day i went out to drive my truck and it stated and idled fine, but as soon as i started to leave it shook badly.
it ildes smoothe but anything over 1300 rpms or so it misses and runs very rough
checked timing, i pulled all the spark plugs and found one with a cracked insulator, replaced it but still no improvements, checked the pionts and regapped them but still nothing.... the only thing that seems to help is pulling the vaccume advance tube, this pretty much eliminates the problem leading me to belive that the advance is not functioning right,
so what do i do?
i hate to go out and buy a 40 dist. and recive no improvements. is it possible the lack of an advance simply hides the problem?
any advice here would be nice. thanks

Sam, the diaphragm may be ruptured. This will cause a vacuum leak through the ported vacuum source on the carb. when you step on the gas. See if the canister can hold a vacuum by itself. You don’t have to buy the whole dizzy, just the vacuum can.
It could be over-advancing but why all of a sudden? Check it with timing light to see if the flashes become erratic when you rev it up. Sorry I can’t think of anything else right now, am a little brain-drained.
it wasnt raining this morning so i hit it with a timing light, it didnt seem eratic, but i couldnt find the timing mark with the light.
its just odd the problem happend all of the sudden,
maybe i should adjust the vaccume advance?
what about the centrifugal or mechanical adcance?
thanks

If you have a '60 I highly doubt it, but is there an EGR valve installed? It's another avenue - but your post reads as if you have it isolated to the dist.
well im not so sure its the dist., its just that the engine runs smoothe when i rev it up if i yank the vacume advance tube.
i thought about the egr valve but i dont see one... the motor is out of a 69 montego or liconoln, car, its not as bad now but it seems to come and go..
heres one thing, i have an edelbrock carb on it, maybe i got the advance hooked up wrong?
funny how it ran fine befor...
i think its the timing chain..it jumped a tooth and advanced itself, that would explain why when u rev it up without any vac advance, it runs smooth, because the timing is already advanced far enough

1979 F-150extcab4x4/460/c6/6inchlift w/60rear44frnt (250 axles and springs)
37 inch boggers
the chain is new and id really hope thats not it, i just had the timing cover off 2 weeks ago to tighten up the fuel pump eccentric
if that is the problem then why when i retard the timing does it not change the way it acts?
The chain and the gears are quite new aren't they? So how would it "jump", the chain is tight the gear teeth are not rounded. So if it jumped a tooth the timing set is toast, and if it is after 1500 miles I would look for a refund.
I would think it has more to do with the distributor, maybe the bushings are worn and there is some slop in the shaft and the vaccuum advacne makes it worse.
When you rev it up, with the advance connected, and hold it at say 1500rpm does it run rough and then clear up or does it run rough as long as it is revving? Maybe even the accelerator pump??? Lack of fuel, ie partially plugged fuel supply line like a filter or pinched line???
Just my aimless thoughts
it had been sitting for a while it might be as simple as the fuel filter
it runs rough at anything over 1400 or so rps and then at about 3000 it like wont maintain... loads up?
its just it ran fine then it just happend so its not the float
and i have doubts on the timing chain
but it idles smoothe
with the vaccume advance disconnected its pretty smoothe just powerless, accept when you rev it up and down rapidly it it gets ##### and backfires
it wasnt raining today so i was able to put in some time on it, and i got it
it was the centrifigal advance, one of the springs was broken on it, and was causing it to advance incorrectly and unevenly, costless very simple fix, thank you guys for all youre advice, see you next time.....
