03 f-350 6.0 diesel......
31k miles and all of a sudden I stop for fuel, fill up and when I restart, the gauge goes to 1/4 tank. My information overhead reads out I have "503 miles" to empty.
If you want to test the guage and the wiring, take the plug off the tank and look for a yellow/lightblue wire. Turn the key to run without starting the truck, and the guage should go to full with the yellow/lightblue unplugged from the tank. Then take a short piece of wire and jamb it up in the connector so it makes contact with the yellow/blue wire. Then take the other end of the short piece of wire and ground it to a clean place on the frame. The fuel guage should swing from full to empty.
If all the above passes, then that means your fuel guage and wiring to the rear are good, and there is something wrong with the sending unit in the tank. There may be a hole in the float causing it to sink.
