Tire size question

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't find an answer any where. What is the diameter of the old tire sizes 8.75-16.5 and 9.50-16.5. Thanks

For a 16.5 inch tire, or for a specific truck?

The wheel diameter(s) are 16.5". The tire diameters are not contained in the sizing info that you supplied. If the size read: 31 x 9.50 x 16.5 then the height (outside diameter) would be approximately 31".

I'm asking about tire size. On some old pickup truck brochures, tire sizes are 8.75-16.5 and 9.50-16.5. I was just wondering what the over all diameters are. Thanks

Thanks, I think the old tires from the '70s were "labeled" (for lack of a better word), differently than today. Is an old 9.50-16.5 tire equal in size to a newer 31x9.50x16.5?

If I'm not mistaken it seems as though you are mistaking tire sizes for rim sizes. The only time I've ever heard mention sizes like 9.50-16.50 is for rims. 9.50 being the thickness and 16.50 being the height or diameter.

tires manufactured back then had only the 9.5 16.5 on them. It was a 31 inch tire with 9.5 width and 16.5 wheel dia. I just got rid of a few of them. They were bias ply too.

That's not what he was refering too.
The tires today say 31x10.50-15 or somthing similar, but older tires showed 78x15 or the 9.50-16.50 he was talking about, which I don't know how that translates into 31" tall.

You can find old tire sizes at:
http://www.coker.com/
Just find the tire size in the search box and check the details.

The 9.5 x 16.5 was 31" in diameter.

I am old enuf to have mounted those old bias ply tires new on rims...

That's why I was mistaking him for talking about rims. Because he didn't mention a height in his question. I didn't realize that they used those numbers for tire sizes back then. Sorry I'm a bit young and don't remember how they sized them back then. My 76 is 2 years older than me. I appreciate the correction though. Always learn something new on this site.

Thanks guys for all the input and information. Like Renzen said, I am too young to know the old tire sizes also. I'm going to check out the coker tire website.
