How to determine wheel size?

I've got a 70 F250. When I got the truck it come with extra wheels. So I have 9 wheels altogether. I know originally they came with 16.5 wheels. However the tires on most of the rims say there 16" and 2 say there 16.5". They all seem to be the same size rim though. So how do I know if they're 16.5 or 16? And I"m guessing 16" tires should not be mounted on 16.5" rims.

Do I need to take the tire off? Otherwise how do I know where the bead seat is?

No need to remove tire. Just measure at the 90 degree edge where the lip of the wheel turns in towards the hub.

In this pic I would measure from the blue line

If the tire is on there, it should have the wheel size showing.

A 16.5 tire on a 16" rim will seat but won't stay seated under load.

A 16" tire on a 16.5" rim will have been cut to fit.

Once you've measured and looked, if you are at all unsatisfied with your results, or, following the general "wisdom" on old tires, have the tires removed and inspected or replace them.

Good tires aren't cheap but they are a lot cheaper than a well-timed tire failure.
