did your cooling system turn into a giant corrosive battery?

Replacement recommended every 2 to 4 years? That strains Gates' credulity and makes me think we might be getting "hosed" in another fashion. Interesting article, but I would take it with a grain of salt considering its target audience.

I have original ('89!) old hoses! And I have no any problem! My engine was rebuilt! But hoses are OK! Dont toch it if you have no leaks, overheating or other problemes, just wash radiator and motor inside every 2-4 years ... If you can see your hoses damaged or too old replace.

I have had to replace quite a few hoses here in florida because even when engine is not running the outside air temp cooks them.

Before aero I used to drive Tavria (small Ukrainian sedan of Ford fiesta of Honda-civic size). I replaced upper hose after 4 years of use (because of leakage). Its hot in summer there (up to 40dgr C) and its about -10dgr C in winter. But my friend drives BMW and he replaces hoses every 2 years...

When I lived in england I hardley ever had to replace hoses, I do think climate has a lot to do with how long they last and the quality of the water in your area, ie is it hard or soft, in england were I lived the water was quite hard meaning it was less acidic. But then if you always run with antfreeze in your system it should protect against any nasties in the water as it is also an inhibitor.

As I remember using water (not antyfreeze) is not reccomended for aero, but there are some cars and trucks disighnet for water (but blue ore green antyfreeze is reccomended). Well known GAZ 2.5R4, 4.25V8, 5.5V8 motors are made of alluminiun. Its temperature is about 80-85dgr C. But I saw rusted alloy blocks!

either alkaline or acidic tap water is corrosive in cooling system...also antifreeze does break down and form corrosive compounds

TL-DR, but I remember reading somewhere about grounding out your cooling system and heater core to prevet corrosion. Happens more often than not in 98-up Crown Vics. I think we put 3 or 4 heater cores in Yellow Cab Y-265 before I finally tacked some grounding straps on the core, the radiator, and the engine block, and never had to change it after that.
