The door tag is never the legal piece of certification. It does show much more data, but the frame numbers along with the windshield tag/numbers is considered to be the legal numbers
Eddie as (the) man said the vin on the passinger side chassis rail just in front of where the axle crosses under is the one that counts. Doors and cabs can be changed out sso the number on the chassis is gospel.
Got it?

In the cool still quiet of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
I didnt notic where it said chassis, i was reading quickly, just saw where it said window, adn it doesnt have window ones, so the ones on teh chassis is the one that matters, okay, cool...
on my 79 there was supposed to be one on the door and there wasnt and i had to bring it to a speical dmv and have them look at the win on the frame so the one on the door is definetly important (the metal one)

OK then.
Does all this apply to the f350 trucks?
I mean is the vin marking on the frame in the same location?
Because I cannot find it to save me,the frame is stripped down to the metal and is bare and I can't see any vin number.(!?)
Jon, You are looking at the passenger side frame rail, right? I have never dealt with a 350 but can't imagine it not being where it is on the lighter trucks. You should be able to open the hood, look over the battery, along the inside top edge and see the vin front to back. There is a second one under the cab.
Keep looking, the numbers are about 3/16" high.

Frames can be changed too. Then what VIN would you use? Actually that was on my 87 so the dash VIN is still legal.
1979 F150 Custom: nothing under the hood at all (again)
1987 F150 XLT Lariat: 88 351W EFI
84 351W: soon to have 91 heads, Crane PowerMax cam, double roller timing chain, Edelbrock Performer intake & Holley carb and be put back in 79 F150
86 & 87 Bronco II: next winter's beater
The "legal" VIN is the one on the frame, period. If you get a junkyard frame and transfer eveything from your current vehicle to the junkyard frame, your truck now has the VIN from that junkyard frame. Of course, that's a nightmare when it comes time to register it, because you won't have a title for that VIN and many states make registering a vehicle with no current registration difficult (inspection and the like). Of course, your door plate won't match the VIN on your title, so you'll need a knowledgable or trusting buyer if you try to sell it. That's why most people would just keep the VIN that's on the door plate, even though it's technically wrong. Who's ever gonna check?
