Professional engine cleaning

I have a 5.8 I'm putting in my 5.0 Mustang. Engine is runs great but is greasy and has some rust on it. I have read some of the posts about engine cleaning but I don't know. In my experience, only the pros can get a block grease and rust free. I was thinking about taking it to a engine builders shop so they could hot tank it or something. The catch is I'm too lazy to break down. It still has the pan, EFI intake, timing cover and valve covers on it. Is that a good or bad idea?

Check out my [link:www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/displayalbum.php?&userid=12&albumid=14|user gallery] or [link:www.clubfte.com/users/krosati/engineswap.html|my homepage] for how I cleaned up my engine. This is what I ended up with and all it cost me is some elbow grease, sweat, and a few 6 packs of brew.

No, its still in the garage. But I performed the same treatment a month after mine to a friends 74 van (replaced head gaskets) and even used the same colors. His van is a daily driver and he logs 150 miles or better a day. The paint still shines and isn't flaking or peeling anywhere. I'll get a picture this week and show what it looks like after 6 months on the road.

I don't know if you have the ability to do this but it's what I do. Load it in the back of the truck and take it to the car wash. High pressure, soap and hot water blows all the grease off that you can imagine. Bring coveralls and prepare to get dirty because it is a very dirty (and wet) job but it only takes about 10 minutes. If you want you can soak it down with engine cleaner or brake cleaner first. I've even laoded stuff on my trailer and backed it into the car wash.

fordsbyjay: I agree - your method works great! However, last time I did this a month ago with old, greasy brake drums and plates for my '45 Jeep, the attendant freaked out on me about getting grease and oil in their collection sump, which technically could result in them getting fined. No sooner after than telling me this, she pointed out the tire soaker / cleaner setting and how well it cut grease - and to hurry up and get done with it! And I was there early in the morning figuring on not having to deal with all the traffic...
