Compressed air thru PVC????
has anyone with a air compressor, piped it thru PVC pipe to
have air access all thru the garage? Or does it need to be copper
or steel pipe??I know pvc (sched 40) has a pretty high burst rating.
ANy thoughts?
whats the hot cold pvc???is it a certain color???And how did you
attach hoses to the ends of the pvc??Is it something i can get
all at home depot?
inch for a main run then came down the wall with 1/2 inch. Then used a 1/2 inch PVC male adapter then a 1/2 inch steel bell reducer to get to the size of my air fittings. You need to allow a way to drain the water
from the lines also.I came down the wall and put in a T for the fittings as above then came on down about 6" and put a small valve to drain the lines.I did not have the water trap at first and when you would couple a air line you would get all the water through your hose.
So I went back and added the traps. On the air compressor end I have a statonary one so I came right out of it with PVC.You could also use a small piece of hose to do this.

Depending on what I'm doing with the air, is how I hook mine to the Galvanized line.
Usually the water trap goes to any painting via a rubber line.
Galvanized pipe is so cheap to use here.

Gentlemen,
When I replumbed my garage for air, I considered using PVC (Poly vinyl chloride). However, after doing some research into the matter I discovered some very alarming information. PVC pipe is only rated for LIQUID transport. It is NOT now or ever rated for AIR. In the event of a fault in the pipe the PVC goes off like a hand gernade spraying shrapnel and glass like shards all over the room. There are several sites which show the destruction of when this happens. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ___ DO NOT DO THIS. PVC is tested for bursting strength with oil, or water. Copper or steel is OK, and the cost diffrence is not worth the gamble. I apologize for not remembering the websites, however, if you still are in doubt, call Genoa PVC company or any others and they will give you the same warning, or tell them what you want to do with it and listen to their reaction !!They are now coming out with a chlorinated poly that IS rated for air. However, it is prohibitively expensive.
IF YOU ARE PLUMBED WITH PVC FOR AIR, STOP USING IT IMMEADIATELY !!! and replumb with iron or copper.
For what it's worth, I didn't want to see anyone get hurt.
let me tell you DO NOT USE PVC for air!!!!!! On 05/03/02 our PVC
pipe exploded with enough force to shoot a 10 ft. chunk of PVC though
a steel roof and inbed shards of the stuff in walls 50 ft. away.Shut it down now. It is just a little more costly to run HIGH PRESSURE HOSE
