Right on dude! Wish I could have seen it! I never really thought of a bone stock '78 351m as any kinda puller, but then again it has more to do with traction and now-how than power alone. I can see how there is more a chance of damaging something if he is chained to is rear end and using 4wd. Especially if the chain was pulling slightly up on his truck and reducing traction as was mentioned above... In 2wd he is chained right to his drive axle so there isnt much force excerted through anything else and the axle itself is pretty tough. But in 4wd most of the pulling power is probably coming from the front axle, and the rear axle that the 'resistance' is bound to then becomes nothing more than a bumper , as if it was just chained to a bumper. Depending on how strong the mounts and everything are - its likely not strong enough for the power of his engine plus yours, somethings gonna break.
yeah i can't belive how much power this thing has for bone stock.... not even an exhaust! it feels like it could pull a house down.. but then again i aqquired it from my great g-pa when he passed (i'm only 17) but he treated it like a million bucks...i would love to see this engine as a 400 and let it loose
Despite what anyone tells you, "hooking chains" or what ever yall call it is one of the stupidest, most pointless things ever IMO. Hook up to a sled and drag it, hook both up to equally heavly loaded trailers and pull a steep hill or something, you aren't really proving anything by hooking up bumper to bumper.
BTW, despite the fact that I'm a die hard ford man, if done in a fair pulling situation, I have my money on the chevy. He has you beat by almost 100hp, and is putting out much more torque than your 351m.
That is true, the most fair way to see who can out pull who is to pull a sled on the track, but most of us dont have the ability to do that. About the only thing hooking chains up is going to prove is what will break first lol. There are alot of ways to lean the odds over to your side if you know how to play things, that I think is what we were talking about above when we said its a lot to do with 'experience'. Did you know according to Bubba's info the stock 351M peaks torque at a lower rpm than the 460 does? Food for thought.
the only thing that matters here is weight and traction....whoever has the most weight and and traction, and keeps their tires from spinning will win...

You are entitled to that opinion. As a broke young man I paid for a lot of booze and truck parts that way. So as a more mature individual now, I somewhat agree; but like fighting, drag racing and climbing stuff, it's something that many young men do whether there is a point or not.
I had a pull off last weekend with a chvey. he had a half ton short box. only good part on his truck is the 454 under the hood. it has perfomer intake and edelbrock carb.
Anyway i have 78 f150 with built 400. I also have detroit locker in rear. we pulled in 4x4. when the whistle blow he got the jump on me and pull me about 2 feet before i floored it. once i floor that 2 feet was recovered vary quick i pulled him about 25ft before i shifted into 2nd then i pull him another 15ft before i stoped. now i never have to hear about his 454 again. i think i won thanks to the locker thow.
I watched a '73 2wd F150 drag an '80 4x4 f-150 all over a parking lot one nite. This was when the '80 was about 2 weeks old! We laughed our asses off. Several attempts and techniques proved the same result. As soon as that '73 would take off, that '80 was going backwards!!
sorry no video but he wants a rematch when his truck is fixed... so definite video then... what he doesn't know is that by the time his truck is fixed mine will be a 400 with carb, intake, headers and exhaust.. curious is to how bad i can beat him next time
A really good idea is to put in a good RV cam and lifters at the same time as the new intake, b/c you will already have everything ready to pull the lifters, then just pull the cam out the front(of coarse you will need to remove radiator and grille), and while your there, put a good double roaller timing chain. With just new intake and cams you wont be happy with the power you get with out replaceing the cam too.
But carb, intake, cam and lifters, timing chain, headers, and a free flowing exhaust and you will be good to go to pull the hell out of him again.
Hey have you had a rematch yet??? or a video? man i love this fourm, makes me wanna go pull some 1!!! but my truck isnt runnin ATM. if anybody else has had a pulling contest post it up here! i would love to read about it!!!
Load your bed with fire wood od dirt or sand just enough to put an extra 500 lbs or so over the rear wheel, that should ensure a victory. also make sure yoor hook piont is equal to or higher than hei you don't want him pulling upwards on you that will reduce weight over your wheels.
