Dana 24 Transfer Case

My 72 F250 390 4 speed 4-Lo won't go.

I worked on the linkage so that the T-case shifts into and out of all gears (4-hi, 2-hi, N & 4-lo), but when in 4-lo I don't get any power to the front axle.

Is the T-case ready for a rebuild? Is it worth draining the oil and looking in through the inspection cover....or should I just pull it out and rebuild/replace?

I have a spare Dana 24 that I can rebuild and swap out, if required.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts/experience.

I have the same x-case, they don't get the same accolades as the np205 but they're just as strong in my book. Yea, take the the path of least resistance; drain it, look for metal shavings in the oil, and pop off that inspection plate to see what you can't see. 24s are geared so we're not talking about a stretched/broken chain here. That's a heavy sucker so I'd wait to drop it untill you've exhausted your other options.

If your knuckles ain't bleeding you did something wrong.

Make sure the linkage is shifting the T/C all the way in. If I do not get mine all the way in power will only go to rear tires(4 lo only to rear tires). Would not hurt to look inside probably could use fresh oil anyway.

Thanks.

I noticed now (guess I didn't notice before) the shifter is hitting the floor edge when I push it into 4-Lo. I'll see if I can adjust the linkage or just cut the hole bigger. Then I'll drain and inspect.
