The Dreaded Hood Rust!

What to do, what to do? Upon grinding away 30 years of paint I was very dismayed at what I believed to be a fairly useable hood. First just a couple pinholes showed up on the front but after turning upside down and grinding paint off the lip underside (lets just say it was more than a couple pin holes). I am now convinced that most trucks you see with perfect paint must still have a monster lurking just beneath the surface. What is the best way to proceed? Chemical dip? Remove spot welds(30+) and remove inner bracing to access? I cannot see replacing the hood without more of the same problem. I need to fix it permanently. What have you guys done?

Well I had a 1995 Z28 run a stop sign and remove that hood for me and went out and found a used hood in better condition.
I would not reccomend this proceedure because it set me back a ways. But it did give me a chance to paint the front portion of the frame and do some engine work while it was exposed.

The new hood has one dent in the corner that is gonna be a bear to get out because it is behind the bracing, I am thinking on cutting a hole to assist in knocking the dent back out and than welding the hole back in.
But hey it doesn't have the dreaded hood cancer.

Well I could not find a better hood-even in a Ford truck salvage yard with a lot to choose from. What I did was cut the brace just before the corners and cut the spot welds out to remove the entire front portion of the brace. After a couple evenings of blasting, grinding and cleaning I painted it all with a high dollar epoxy primer sealer and welded it back in. I cut some 1 inch strips and replaced the hoods lower lip (about the center 30") just behind the bend so I didn't have to reshape most of the actual lip. I got lucky that the worst of the rust was on this flange and not on the actual nose of the hood. Now we are done with the bondo and are moving on to the box prep.

Good work Ricky.
My hood is rusted not only where yours was, but the outer visible panel of the nose as well. I mean, it's BAD.
I've got 3 other hoods all with their own issues I need to fix.

The rust on my original hood was so bad that there was a rusted thru hole big enough to put your fingers in. The guy who painted the truck for my father had just covered it with bondo and it just got worse. So I guess have the Z28 total the hood was a good thing because I ended up with a better hood.

Rick good job
Did you take pictures to post?

To bad..
You have changed my mind on how I am gonna attempt my dent repair.

I think I am gonna remove the back support and bump out the dents and than re-install the support. When the weather gets better.

Thanks
