Any one have torque curves for a starter motor?
Or an idea as to what the torque potential might be?
Thinking of building a winch using a starter and flywheel from a FE.
(That is if the number work out)
Anyone do something similar from surplus parts?
This is the specs from a Visteon starter used on 1.8L to 2.5L diesel. Pretty high rpms. (Granted it does not resembles a Ford FE starter). I read somewhere 120 lb-ft is what the starter generates at the motor or is reflected to the motor.
Alan for your hydraulic pump power source. Put a fish scale on your pump and see how much torque you are going to need to spin it under load (unless you have the spec sheet in front of you). Might find rear window motor out of an old jeep wagoneer will suffice. Those things are powerful.
The trademark brand Superwinch was invented and patented by a former Ford engineer. It uses Ford starter motors directly attached to a spool. It comes in various pull capacities and gear ratios. See them lots of places like Sears and JC Whitney.
I found an aircraft 24volt starter motor that spins at about 55 rpm and has 850# of torque. I think that works out to be about 8+ HP which is more that most winches.
Before I found this one, I was looking at some 24volt starter motors from big rigs at Napa.
The main reason for the 24 volts is the extra torque and not having to gear it down.
If your using the flywheel and starter from an FE, that should be geared down enough right there, but that'll make for a huge winch.
Use a hydraulic motor and run it off your PS system. You can get cheap Hyd motors at Northern Hydraulics and other places. If you can find one, run your system thru a worm gear speed reducer. Those units can't be driven backwards, -from the spool back into the motor.
Yep it'll be a big winch if and when I build one.
Want something to pull trees/logs through tight spots to a portable bandmill. (Hobby stuff)
I have a vision of my PS pump melting if put to this use ,though its a good idea.
