I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of axles I have in my rear end. I have a 1970 F-100 with a 360. Also does anyone know where I can find some stock or better replacement axles just in case mine are too worn to reinstall when I do my gear change.
Well, if your '70 F100 360 is anything like my '70 F100 390(360 originally), it's got 28 spline axles. However, the only way to be sure of that is to pull one. I really doubt that your's are worn beyond reuse-they're a part that doesn't wear much. But I hear Moser axles are pretty good, but high dollar.

That's cool. I know an 8.8" is a different animal but after 150,000 miles on my dads 88 F-150 there were nasty grooves worn into both of his axles. Fluid level was checked often but never changed.
I've got two 1/2 tons that have 28 spline... I also got a rear out of a 1/2 ton that was 31 spline. If you have the tin tag, I've had wrecking yard ppl check their computer or reference books on the code. Or if your pullin the axle... count 'em that way. Part of the Letters on the tin axle code tag indicate the spline type.
Yeah, the 8.8 is a different animal. The 8.8 bearings (roller) ride directly on the axle, using the axle itself as the race. The nine incher, uses a bearing with integral race that slips over the axle. My '70 happens to use the big 3300lb ball bearing. $$$! The only ways I can think of destroying an axle in a nine incher would be gross abuse, like drag racing with serious horsepower, rock crawling with monster tires and a lot of torque, or a bearing failure which would adequatly heat the locking coller enough to expand and slide off.

I talked to a Ford tech at the local dealer recently about this. He claimed that he can predict the spline count by simply looking at the contour of the axle flange. Anyone know more?

Hey guys, just wanted to add my two cents... The 9" axle's are pretty hard to tear up. But I would like to know something one step further. I have a set of N.O.S. 31 spline axle's and the measurement on them are: Long side- 31 13"/16" and the short side
27 7/8" from the inside of the stud flange, to the tip of the axle. Does anyone know what vehicle these fit in? I accuired them from the local high school here in Murray county GA. They used them, as well as the rest of the rear end for training purposes in their shop calss in 1969. I didn't get the housing and I have no idea what they fit in. I've tryed to sell them, but no one know's what they would work on, so everyone is kinda gun shy to buy them. I'd like to use them in my 68'F-100, but haven't had a chance to do any measuring. Can anyone help me out here??
Thanks,
Bill
