Hey folks-what are the aftermarket items on the coil springs -they're rubber and go from one coil to the next-usually in a pair? Do they stiffen the spring or limit it's length? knowwhatimtalkingabout?
Those blocks are for lifting the suspension. They increase the length of the coil. Very popular during the 60's and 70's. All they're good for is to give you a stiff ride, totally useless! Why not replace the coils if they're sagging?
Have to agree with Barry and Tomrooster on this one they were at most a bandaid. I would remove them I have seen them made out of Alluminum also and they actualy threaded in with a ratchet, also junk.
I have a set, or something like it. the go between the coils, and wrap around for about one full turn of the spring. they are called Coil Spacers, and sold at Pep Boys.
They do Not lift any on these old trucks, our coils are wider apart than the spacers. They do stiffen the spring up by about 20%. Thats what I was after, and for that, they work perfectly. I like a little firmer ride, and the truck still has that old car, floating down the road feeling.
thanks folks-I don't think it a coil spacer exactly-it doesn't go all the way around the coil-jus t apiece of rubber 1"x1"x2" that separates one ring from the other. This side of the truck sits a little lower than the other side-thinking this might be why.
That's what they're for.... to lift the spring. You insert them and then turn or twist them to expend each space between the rolls. One of your coils is softer than thew other. It's lost it's tension.
Got it-Thanks-That's what I was afraid of-I bought the truck w/o a bottom chackle on that side..it probably ran for a long time on the spring only and wore it out-prompting the last guy to add the spacer instead of tracking down the shackel which was next to impossible to find. Thanks folks! I'm off to buy new coils!
