I have lost reverse in my van. All forward gears seem to work fine, but when you shift into reverse I get nothing. Also the vehicle appears to be in 1st gear in neutral.
I have checked linkage. It appears to be working normally. I have disconnected it & shifted the tranny manually from under the vehicle & it still has no reverse and a forward gear in neutral.
When it is on the jack stands & I shift into reverse the tranny appears to engage and will roll the tires forward about 3-4 revolutions and then stops.
I have checked modulator valve & fluid. the modulator valve appear to be fine. The fluid level looks ok, the color is good & it doesn't smell burned.
Any ideals or insite would be greatly appreciated.
I would think that your reverse servo is shot or that the selector pawl has slipped forward a notch because it sounds like your selecting neutral when it should be reverse, you will have to take off the pan to check this out.To check out the reverse servo you would have to remove the valve body, but I would think that there is a problem with that selector pawl.

Once you dropped the pan, the reverse servo can be removed without removing the valve body. It's held by 4 little bolts and is spring loaded, so be careful. You would also need a reverse servo gasket, cheaper if you buy it from a tranny shop instead of a parts house.

It seemes to me this is selector problem. I had this problem after nice off-road trip! Reverse can not disapeare in one moment! I feeled problem 2 month before I had to replace servo pistol.
Now I'm sure, that manual trannies are really problem-free. 150K for A4LD is limit! I had to bue 5st tranny on junkyard from end of life 400k car +100k on my aero and I had never seen it inside! I had to replace clutch plate and clutch master cyl only!
My opinion: if your tranny is more than 100k full rebuild will help you! Ore you will fix something else half year later, and something elese next year.... (Fix Overtime daily... kiddng). All the a4ld problemes, posted on this forum were "tested on myself". May be a4ld is not reliable only...?
