i was wondering how the kb177 pistons need to be installed in a 400? the instructions are only for a 351C and i was wondering if that would be the same for the 400. it has only one valve relief. oh and if it makes a difference i will be running the new edelbrock heads.
the wrist pins are the wrong size for 400 rods. they can be bushed, consult your local machine shop. otherwise they install the same as in a Cleveland.
I think you'll have a lot of compression to deal with if using the Edelbrocks. -2cc valve relief piston with a 1.67CH and a 60cc head on a 400 works out to more than 11.3:1. http://www.fordmuscle.com/calculators/compression.shtml
yeah compression will be a little high but its not a daily driver so high octane fuel or race fuel is no problem. i have access to race fuel for a good price at my local speed shop. so far what i understand they go in just like a cleveland then
High octane will help a lot but I'm still concerned about a H-eute piston with over 11:1 compression. The KB148 has a 13cc dish and could drop the compression to just over 10:1 or if you want high compression, you might consider a forged piston. 351M/400 piston pins are .975" and 351C/W are .912".
Check with our sponsor here. Tim Meyer has Hypereutectic zero deck pistons that can be dished to get your desired CR. They are made for a 400, so no connecting rod bushing is required. Zero deck pistons will give you the advantage of quench and allow higher CRs than other flattops which are down the hole. even the KB 177 is too far in the hole for quench.
Thanks Dan, but technically, we are in the process of having the hypers. made again. They will be made by Keith Black, we may go with 2 designs. One that is already dished for the aussie heads and also flat top. KB has not gotten back to me with drawings yet.
I'm running hyper clevland piston's in my 400 right now with just a little over 10 to 1 compression.I have had no problem's thus far.You just have to make sure you gap the ring's with enough gap so they don't but together.I have a friend who running a little over 12 to 1 compression with Hyper's with no problem's until he sprayed a 250 shot of nitrous'Then they lasted for about 12 run's.
yeah thats what i have been hearing. i gapped the top ring the instructions said the middle one was fine i dont plan on spraying and i plan on running a bigger head gasket standard is like .040 but the one i was looking at is like.068 or so i will have to look again. the only down side is the 85 dollar price tag.
don't take anything for granted, you have to check everything yourself and make sure it's right! the thicker the head gasket you use will decrease your compression ratio.
