I just picked up a 76 F350 dually with a 4 spd 360 and a dana 70 rear. I did the vin decode and it says i have 3.73 gears. I also pulled the tag on the rear and it is a 3.73 rear end. The tag was very hard to read but i was able to make out the 3.73. My question is... Is this rear end posi or limited slip? I looked for an "L" between the 3 and the 73 but the tag was in such bad shape i couldn't see if it was there or not. There was a space between the 3 and the 7. I had thought that 3.73 gears were posi or limited slip, is that correct? Any help would be great.
The best way to find out would be to jack up the rear axle so both wheels are off the ground. Don't forget to block to front wheels. (Safety first!) Put the transmission in neutral and spin one of the wheels in one direction. If the other one goes the same direction you have a posi rear end. If it goes in the opposite direction you have a one wheel wonder. You might also want to try it with the tranny in gear to. If you have a posi you might use a lot of effort to turn the tires because the power is being directed straight into the driveshaft and you are actuall trying to turn the engine with the wheel, but they will still turn the same direction. An open diff the wheels should still turn opposite from one another but you should not have to use as much effort because the power is going to the other wheel.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
