what ever I can fit under there. he said he draws the line at 44's but I was wanting 33 or 35 no matter I mess around in mud and trails that the big boys (AKA 44 and up) havent played in so Im good just lots of mud where I do.

I would consider 40's and up "big boys" as long as the tread was aggressive... not some 46" MT Baja's or 40" Dick Cepek's or whatever...

Youre pretty lucky to get tires like that... If I were you Id get 35's with a good tread design like IROK Radials...

IROK's are soft. You probably do not want them if you're gonna see alot of miles on the road. They're expensive tires, but good tires. If you're considering them, you might think about grabbing a second set of rims to use them as your "playtoys".

The D44 swap is a good one. 77.5-79 F150/78-79 Bronco D44's (earlier D44's [76-77] have 1/2" thick tubes which are tougher though) practically "fall into place" underneath 80-96 trucks. A D60 would be nice, but they also cost more initially. And...you can do it on the cheap if you can get a parts truck to snag all the brackets and such off of. You will need 4" of lift with significant trimming of the TTB crossmember to clear the differential housing, or 6" to be clear under all but the most flexxed situations. If you want more info, there are those here that have done it. You can talk to me about it (in the process of gathering SAS parts as well as 9" swap items for my 94), or FSB also offers alot of information on this.

Gotta scrounge to do that job cheap though.

For road you want to stick with something a little less aggressive... I think for starting out you should maybe get some MT's or something...

just out of curiousity, how old are you?

All you have to look for is the axle itself... you want to get that as close to home as possible. the brackets and stuff will be a lot cheaper to get local rather than order, but you can still order them from places like www.broncograveyard.com .
I find it hard to imagine that there are no solid axles in your state

I'm doing kinda the same thing, doing up my DD on a budget.

Can you run lock-rites every day on the highway? A fellow that I was talking to at a shop said that you can't and that they are more for off road only use and said that I would be better off with a limited slip. I figure of if I am in there anyways redoing the gears, which I will be doing, then I may as well get rid of the open in the real and put something worthwhile. What do you think?

Well... thats not exactly true. You can use these for everyday driving, but they will eat your tires a lot faster than if you ran an open diff. They are automatic lockers, which means that it enguages pretty much when you give it some gas... Around corners and turns thats bad. But you can still do it.

Well... if you have $700 to blow then a detroit elec-trac or ARB air locker is best. Assuming that you dont have OBA, the Elec-Trac is your best bet. If not, then a LS will help out a lot.

Thanks for the advice. I like the idea of the limited slip since I have limited money.

I will stop hogging this thread now

haha youre all good. You could always try to find one in a J-yard and rebuild it... that would be really cheap compared to a locker. However, LS units are usually on newer trucks, and junkyards don't usually have newer trucks.

The wrecker here said that he had some for the 8.8 and he would pull one for me for $200 cdn. I thought that was a good price to get away from the open. As long as the clutches are ok, this is what I was thinking of doing.

Can't wait to get my rig grown-up some.
