i have an 86 with aod and manual 4x4 shifter and a 94 with m4od and manual 4x4 shifter i love em both i never really trusted the electronic 4 wheel ever since the motor had gone in my moms old 90 bII
Why do you think Autom are better for offroading? I Have an automatic 1993 and love it. But I am interest in that comment
I wouldn't say they are better for offroading generally, but for rockcrawling the automatic is so much easier. I really have to hand it to the guys that can handle the heavy veichles on the rocks with a manual transmission.
i've done a little off road with both of them and it is a little easier with the at because you dont have to deal with the clutch but thats what keeps you busy, other than the sheer excitement of offroading as it is tho
now on the other hand if you want to pull someone out of a rut it is alot easier with the at
i understand that too, my stepdad has a 70's f-100custon with a plow on it and she's mt it can be a pain we have at at work with plows and i agree its easier with those but when you drive the mt like i do its hard to get used to the at even the trucks we use you need two feet to drive otherwise it can get a little difficult
I have an 85 f250 and an 85 bronco. Both of them had c6 auto when i bought them and now the truck has a zf 5 and the brocno a t19 4. I love Mt in my opionon there the only way to go. I feel that they are much better for offraoding towing trailers and yes even plowing snow. You still have to shift an at between gears when ya plow but with an mt you can really control the wheel spin. Which helps alot to move more snow if you arent sitting just smoking the tires. Alos I like to be able to down shift to hold a trailer back on a hill. as far as starting on a hill ya just have to learn how to drive a stick. I can pull away from any grade of a hill and not move back an inch. Thats actually on the CDL test is to stop an a steep hill and pull away without moving back more then an inch. Also figure that all farm tyractors are MT and alls they do is pull and push all day long so if a at was better they would use it but they dont.
you do make some good points, my old lady had been in the truck with me the one day and this dumars was right there behind me on this steep hill we got and she was all like you better be good, i hate these people that just sit right there on ya
In my humble opinion, the manual is the way to go if you are serious about four-wheeling. My first gear is 6.72 to 1, and I can idle over any obstacle I get my tires on. Unfortunately, a granny gear that low is WORTHLESS on the street, effectively making mine a three speed manual. AT's are not as versatile, but a little more user friendly.
Well I think you all guys are right both type of transmission have it one ddosa and bads This weekend, nevertheless, I have a goor offroad trip wiht lot of big rocks. I really enjoy the support that the automatic gave me not let the truck good back when I have to stop and start moving in high clmb. I have to said that most of the people with us was very well impressed with the Bronco performance (Take note that here in Colombia is not a common car).
