'00 F350 PSD 4X4 Automatic w/ OD 94K mi. - Today installed K&N intake kit and blue headlight bulbs. Tried to do a test drive, backed out of the garage, put it in drive - nothing. I've not had any transmission problems to date. Truck drove and shifted fine earlier today. Now it will engage in reverse only, when shifted to drive RPMs increase very slightly then settle back to just barely above idle. Trans. fluid level is normal. OD light on shifter works normally. What else can I check before calling the "experts"?
Does the throttle respond normally? It's hard to believe the tranny shelled out just sitting there. I'd start by checking everything around your work area and then crawl underneath to make sure all the electrical connectors on the tranny are good.
Yes, normal throttle response. Checked all around work area, removed intake kit. Don't see where any anything is disconnected even under truck on trans. This does not make sense, there were no strange noises, truck drove nicely earlier in the day.
Just as an experiment, if you unplug the transmission range sensor on the
driver side of the transmission, will the radio still cut out when you shift
to reverse? You'll have to start the truck before unplugging the TR sensor
(the neutral safety switch is inside). The check engine light is probably
going to come on the the OD light will be flashing. You also won't have all
your forward gears (only second and OD once you get moving fast enough), but
reverse will still work.

i've drained the fluid. it's near time for service so i figured go ahead and see if anything in the pan. i hope the local napa has a new filter in stock.
i dropped the pan - surprisingly clean, just a little black residue around the plug. i'll get a new filter and fluid and drain the TC. any mods should be done while i have the pan off? truck is completely stock.

might as well do the sonnax springs/ tricumulator valve while it is off. search for this, it is a great $50 mod and most say that it should come from the factory like that. but since you are probably going to get it from Blackclouddiesel.com (where most everybody gets it from right?) it will take a few days to get it and you probably cant drive it without the pan for a few days....
Charles! Good to see you come by! You are sure going to be welcome here!
For everyone who doesn't know Charles, or at least heard of him, he is a Ford diesel tech at a dealership in remote, rural, Northern California.
He has been running a Yahoo Groups list for newbies for some time now, and has helped a BUNCH of folks that have never heard of FTE to fix their PSD's. I used to subscribe to his group, and I'll vouch for the fact that he knows some of the remotest details about our trucks. He's been there and walked the walk! He'll be a great asset to our forum with his first-hand knowledge.
Again, Charles, welcome to FTE. It's a great place to hang a hat! We're real tolerant of newbies and old f*rts alike (that was NOT directed at you, Guzzz), and no one has a contentious attitude, unlike SOME forums we COULD (but won't) mention. ;-)))
You're going to fit right in with us!
Welcome to "Our Happy Fizzies Party"!

sorry guys & gals, i'm still learning how to use this. i appreciate all the help.
Dieselan250;
i unplugged the range sensor after starting the truck, it will now engage in forward and have to give it plenty of throttle to get it to move - probably because it's second gear.
the OD light flashes, radio continues to work when shifted to reverse, trans will engage in reverse, check engine light does not come on. is it safe to drive? how fast? how far?
Strokin_it7.3
yes, i think the sonnax springs will have to wait for the next scheduled maintenance. thanks for the advice
you should replace the vss to eliminate that as a problem. i cost around $20. that is usually the prob when you give it plenty of throttle and it doesnt want to move.
