i've been reading about the vss. Lots of great info. on this site. difficult to stay focussed and not get sidetracked.
i pulled the vss out that some gorilla installed. it did have some black crud on it, not much and cleaned it. checked the resistance across the two pins = 1.84K ohms and it does have some magnetic pull to it. reinstalled it and applied dielectric grease to the connector.
the truck still has the same problem, reverse but no forward until i unplug the transmission range finder. then the OD light flashes. D will engage - does feel like second gear. radio continues to work when shifted to reverse. the service engine soon light seems to be working normally - comes on for a short time then goes off b4 the wait to start light goes out. i will get a new vss & install it tomorrow.
btw i noticed the throttle seems to be a little sluggish in D with the transmission range finder still connected. engine is still cold.
Wait for Charles to reply back about your findings before throwing a lot of parts at it. He at least got you two forward gears back, and may have a better idea of what your problem is now.
Gee, at least now you can drive it to the tranny shop if you ultimately HAVE to.

yea, i know you're right. it's just that i've been without my PSD for three days now - i'm going through WITHDRAWAL. the only other time this truck let me down was the cps at 35k, back on the road next day - we've spent a lot of time together. i hope charles comes back soon. thanks to him i was able to move the truck to a better place to work on it and like you say if i do have to take it to the transmission shop.
This is really out there but it might be worth a try...an electrical system reset by disconnecting both batteries and waiting about 5 minutes...turn on lights to discharge any charged caps in system. Doesn't cost anything and is easy and simple to do....just save radio station presets in your notes. Worth a try?

not that far out there given the amount of electronics on this truck and the circumstances. i tried it but did not make a difference. thanks for the reply.

Yea, and then when I realize I've overlooked it a hundred times and on top of that it will probably be something self induced...WHOLEY CRAP WHAT AN IDIOT!!

Another thought ...how about the wire looms coming up under the master brake cylinder from the tranny?

Tried that. Now the problem seems to be worsening. It will no longer go into second when the transmission range sensor is disconnected and the passenger side headlight stopped working, switched with a working bulb - still doesn't work.
Could this be a problem with the computer? Is there someway to restart it or will it restart by reconnecting both batteries?

Did u clean your plugs with electrical cleaner? Home Depot has some big spray cans of the stuff.
No just blew them out with air pressure and reconnected them. I didn't want to wash all the grease off them. I guess that will be the next step, what I'm doing now is not working. Any way to get an electrical schematic online?
