past is the old IH 466 reliabilty 30k hours + on my dad's dozer and it has never had an overhaul. present prolly the duramax because it is fun, easy to bomb, reliable, and most of all quite.....everything diesels were not in the beginning..
pretty soon with biodiesel and low sulfer diesel, diesels won't even have to stink. it'll be great. their use to be a ton of disadvantages to a diesel....now there just about zero. i think the duramax helped bring these attributes to the public, and i think diesel is being seen in a new light by the masses. I am excited to see what diesels come out in the future. You have the TDI diesel and the jeeps have them now. it will be interesting to see where this goes.
the only disadvante i can think of is the weight. i would like to see a reliable aluminum block. something light. i really think biodiesel is the future, and i think it is a lot closer than hydrogen. it might even be better than ethanol.
I am sort of partial to the Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine, would be one heck of a truck engine. After that either the 6.0 PSD or the 5.9 Cummins (05 or newer), which ever one is connected to the load.
