Second that on the VW TDI pulls mountain passes at 70mph VW service sucks though gladd my dad taught me how to wrench. wish I could get a f-150 with a diesel engine
that TDI is a sweet car, if i had to have a daily driver for long high mile daily trips to and from work. a TDI would be my pick. i would put a chip in that puppy and let'er eat.
I work on VW for a living.
You TDI owners would like to know that the intake manifold fills up with carbon and soot and it gets restricted pretty quickly. It's a fairly easy task to remove the manifold and clean it out. A bunch of 6mm allen heads hold it all together. Symptoms are a slightly reduced acceloration above 2000 rpm.
And if you get some bigger injectors those engines get a LOT more low end torque, and smoke as well.
My favorite would be the new diesel tactical generator the the Military Special Forces uses. You can set it on a workbench right in front of you and you would not know it is running. The combustion actually takes place inside of the piston in order to help keep it quite. I'd love to have one for elk camp, but they run about $25,000 a pop.
The Japanese built (Perkins licensed) 2.2 4 cylinder diesel, used in 1982-84 Mazda B2200 trucks and a few 1984 Ford Rangers. My '83 B2200, (purchased new) would get 35+ mpg on the road. Not fast but fairly torquey. Over 100,000 miles-two glow plugs and a fan clutch were only problems. Ran great when I sold it. If it had been in the larger Ranger I may still have it. Second owner put another 100K on it.
Is a t444e the same as our beloved 7.3 PSD? I was looking at the specs on the t444e and they dont look similar to the 7.3
yes the t444e is the same as the 7.3. just like the VT365 is the same as the 6.0. ford uses a different computer to make more HP, but less torque. most people only look at the amount of HP. not realizing you need the torque to get the weight moving.
If I was in the market, it wouldn't be a Ford PSD, or a GM Duramax, it would be a Cummins 5.9. I've never had a Dodge, but I believe the Cummins is the top Diesel.
