I need to replace my work computer, and part of the justification in getting something newer/faster/better is to say it "replaces PC operating at xxx Mhz".
I went into the "System" folder, under general it just says "Pentium x86 series" and shows the RAM (~256), but not the CPU speed. I know it's a Pentium III series.
I also tried watching the screen during startup; some 'puters go thru DOS script that shows some basic system details, but this one just goes right to Windows on startup. I forgot all the DOS commands that may take me to the right place...
The computer in question is a 4 or 5-year old Dell Latitude notebook, running Win2000. Any help appreciated. Thanks!!!
As Rex says, there are buku 3rd party apps. to test the functionality of virtually any component of system. And although replacing the cpu may fix the problem, I think it should be matched with the mainboard at the time of purchase. The reason is that many retailers will gladly honor a warranty of a DOA device, but with a cpu, they have no evidence that the item was dead before it left the store, or whether connecting it to a bad mother board caused the problem.

System Information | System Summary
Processor
Should indicate the family, model, stepping, and most importantly, Mhz speed of the CPU.
Also, with 256 of memory, you're asking a lot out of that laptop. 256 was fine in the days of Windows 95 and playing solitaire, but not in today's world.
And I don't think you can swap the chip in a Dell laptop (at least not easily).
Upgrading a processor is routine though maybe not worthwhile, even on the proprietary-type Dell, a good manf'r (shades of Packard Bell). The mobo power connector is often Dell-unique, but that's not the prob. A (Intel) processor that fits the Socket will work, a new rig is mo' betta'.
Your company has the right idea DonsFX4, replace it with a newer and more capable rig. *No personal cost* can't be beat :~)
